Experiencing an Active Volcano!

The coolest thing at Kona is the chance to see the changes made by an active volcano. The earth is being created and we could watch it. In recent years two Villages and major roads were taken out. The Black Sands beach that Randy remembers when he was three years old was gone but about quarter of a mile further out there was a new black sands beach just forming.

We got to walk out to where we could see the lava flow into the water.
It rained a little...thus the towel cover.

This is what it looked like in the daylight.

This is what it looked like at night. Very cool!

Black sands beach created when the ocean erodes the lava.

The lava actually took out the road a few years ago.....

I guess so!

The ocean and the lava combine to make cool formations!

This is a tube formed by lava surrounding a tree,
then the tree dies and leaves the tube.

Randy and Kelsey standing inside a lava tube--kind of a hallway
formed when the lava stops flowing.
